lyrics

All day cooking, dinner to prepare
Chicken on the menu, dinner is near
Buttermilk batter, crackers to coat
Chicken on the table, find the gravy boat
Don’t think I can wait, maybe just a snack
Sardines & Saltines, eaten right out back

“Somethin’s fishy,” I heard her yell.
“Don’t ruin your dinner,” How can she tell?
“Somethin’s fishy. Are those sardines?”
To the sidewalk with my Saltines.

“Somethin’s fishy,” I heard her yell.
“Don’t ruin your dinner.” How can she tell?
“Somethin’s fishy. You can’t really hide.
Come back inside ’cause dinner’s at five.”

The day’s half done, potatoes to mash
Don’t forget milk & salt, just a dash
Ambrosia salad, coconut pie
String the beans, and beets beside
Can’t wait much longer, another little snack
Sardines & Saltines, eaten right out back

“Somethin’s fishy,” I heard her yell.
“Don’t ruin your dinner,” How can she tell?
“Somethin’s fishy. Are those sardines?”
To the sidewalk with my Saltines.

“Somethin’s fishy,” I heard her yell.
“Don’t ruin your dinner.” How can she tell?
“Somethin’s fishy. You can’t really hide.
Dinner’s on the table”, said with a smile wide.

Day’s over, here we sit
Sunday Dinner, lickety Split
No salad, then no pie
Dinner ruined. Wonder why?
Back porch snacks did me in.
Sunday Dinner, ruined again

“Somethin’s fishy. I just knew it.
Parked on the stairs–How could you do it?”
“Somethin’s fishy. Those ARE sardines
Out on the sidewalk with your Saltines.”

“Somethin’s fishy. You made me yell.
And ruined your dinner, I could just tell.”
“Somethin’s fishy. You’ll get your due
Tomorrow for dinner, enjoy sardine stew.”
